The songs of the Elizabethan era are among the most beautiful works of vocal literature. John Dowland, Thomas Campian and Thomas Morley are regarded as outstanding composers of this genre, and many of their popular melodies have become favourite folk songs.12 Compositions have been transcribed from the original lute tablatures into modern guitar notation by the musicologist Dirk Möller. Significant interventions in the musical substance were avoided during the adaptation. Graham Waterhouse has set the poem from the first part of Goethe's “Faust” to music. The music takes up the concise, natural rhythms of the text, intensifying, developing and parodying them. Das Gedicht "Gruselett" ist Christian Morgensterns "Galgenliedern" (1905) entnommen. Die englische Übersetzung, die hier benutzt wurde, hat der Komponist selbst angefertigt. Die Priorität lag dabei auf dem Klang und der "Sprechfähigkeit" der Worte, um den Interpreten die Aufführung zu erleichtern. Die Wechselwirkung der Worte und der Musik wird am besten erreicht, wenn alle drei Instrumentalisten gleichzeitig spielen und sprechen, obwohl theoretisch das Spielen und Sprechen auch von verschiedenen Personen übernommen werden kann. Sprech- und Instrumentalstimme sollten wie zweistimmige Inventionen auf dem Klavier gelernt werden, da sich der rhythmische Fluss aus dem Zusammenspiel von Sprechen und Spielen ergibt. Ein gewisser Grad an Theatralik steigert den dunklen, mysteriösen Aspekt des Stückes und verlangt vom Spieler den einfallsreichen Gebrauch seiner Stimme. Der Komponist schrieb das Stück für ein junges Streichtrio aus Neuss, das es 2008 erfolgreich bei "Jugend musiziert" aufführte.
