Die vorliegende Sammlung nennt sich "Trios in Rag", weil der durchlaufende Beat im Interesse der Selbstständigkeit aller Stimmen fehlt. Die vorliegende Triosonate gehört zu den ganz wenigen Kammermusikwerken des Hochbarock, die Blockflöte und Fagott miteinander vereinen. Wenngleich in dieser Komposition eine "konventionelle" Tonsprache nicht zu verkennen ist, gelingt es dem Komponisten, beide Instrumente in schöner Gleichberechtigung gegen- und miteinander konzertieren zu lassen, ohne allzu hohe technische Anforderungen zu stellen.

Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901) enjoyed a high reputation as a church musician, counterpoint teacher and organ composer. The Cantilène in F major, originally composed for organ in 1887, is presented here in an arrangement for soprano saxophone (clarinet) and organ. Also available is an arrangement of this composition for trumpet (oboe) and strings (N 3866). This edition can also be realised for soprano saxophone or clarinet and strings.
