Werner Heider
Three viola pieces Viola
Werner Heider wrote the ‘Three Viola Pieces’ for his wife Lydia. Each of the three short pieces has its own musical character, sometimes calm and sad, sometimes energetic and insistent. The third piece in particular, with the playing instruction ‘like a little song’, seems to evoke memories.

Georg Philipp Telemann
Twelve Sonatas | sonatas 10 - 12 | volume 4 Violin (flute) and Basso continuo
First edition This edition is based on a manuscript from the Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung. It comes from the estate of Telemann, who gave it to his grandson Georg Michael Telemann (1748-1831). G. Poelchau acquired the manuscript in 1834 with a pack of music stored in a church tower in Riga. From Poelchau's estate († 1836) the sonata work came to the Royal Library in Berlin. The sonatas are dedicated to the brothers Rudolf, Hieronymus and Johannes Wilhelm Burmester of a Hamburg patrician family dated 1 March 1734, with the note that they follow the ‘12 methodical sonatas’, which were also dedicated to the first two brothers. The close connection between the two large sonata works can be found in their valuable musical content, in the sequence of movements (slow, fast, slow, fast), and in the succession of keys (C-a-D-h-E-F-d-G-e-A-f sharp-g). The bass lines are often involved in the theme. Occasionally we are reminded of J.S. Bach's inventions. In the title, the violin is named as the solo instrument before the flute, as several sonatas are unmistakably written “violinistically” without this hindering their playability for flute. The present edition adheres strictly to the manuscript. Suggestions for dynamics are indicated as such by brackets, as are those for articulation (by dotted lines), which may differ for violinists from those intended for flute. Experienced players should use the original figured bass for their own interpretation. The 12 sonatas made available to the public here for the first time are among the best compositions of this kind by Telemann, who dedicated them to 'connoisseurs and lovers' with the wish '...faire une bonne partie de Vos amusements'. The sonatas will fulfill this purpose today just as they did at that time. Content: X. - Soave - Dolce - Spirituoso XI. - Dolente - Vivace - Piacevole XII. - Teneramente - Spirituoso - Gratioso

Karl Friedrich Abel
Two sonatas Violoncello and piano (hapsichord)
Karl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) is regarded in music history as ‘the last musician who treated the viola da gamba with happiness and favour’ (quote from Goethe's 8th book ‘Dichtung und Wahrheit’). His acquaintance with Johann Christian Bach is also well known. Together they founded and conducted the London Bach-Abel concerts from 1764-1781. The fact that he also turned to the violoncello in later years has been almost completely ignored in music research. The two sonatas presented here (presumably composed in Berlin in 1782) are taken from the Abel Complete Edition by Walter Knape (published by Ad Portam, Cuxhaven). The two sonatas are undoubtedly early classical cello music, as can be seen from the outward appearance of the clef. In the G major sonata, the usual three movements are followed in a formally particularly appealing manner by a minor-key Romance as the fourth movement (with diminished octaves in bars 10 and 14), which leads into a folk-song-like major-key movement in 6/8 time and thus concludes the sonata in G major. The Adagio of the A major sonata features an original cadenza with high harmonics, which was a new playing technique at the time and is an attractive introduction to classical cello technique (Boccherini, Romberg, etc.) for today's cellists. The bass accompaniment is unfigured, so that the early classical piano writing can be played just as well on the harpsichord as on the fortepiano. The violoncello part has been precisely marked by the editor. Content: I. Sonate G-Dur (WK-Sammelordnung 147) - Allegro moderato - Adagio - Tempo di Minuetto II. Sonate A-Dur (WK-Sammelordnung 148) - Allegro moderato - Adagio - Rondeau - Romance
