Die vorliegende Sonate wurde als Nummer acht den "12 Sonaten a Violino e Violone o Cimbalo", op. 5, die im Jahr 1700 in Rom erschienen und der Kurfürstin Sophie Charlotte von Brandenburg gewidmet sind, entnommen. Um den Gegebenheiten der Blockflöte besser gerecht zu werden, wurde die Sonate von der originalen Tonart e-Moll transponiert, wobei lediglich einige Oktavversetzungen notwendig wurden.
