Gestalten der griechisch-römischen Mythologie und Geschichte charakterisiert der Augsburger Domkapellmeister in den vorliegenden kurzen Stücken mit einfachsten musikalischen Mitteln. Ursprünglich sind diese Trompeter-Stückle für Tromba marina konzipiert, einem Abkömmling des Trumscheits; wegen ihres trompetenähnlichen Klangs wurde sie in Klöstern eingesetzt und ging so als "Nonnengeige" in die Musikgeschichte ein.

Scarlattis Komposition, die unter dem Titel "Fuga" als letzte der 30 Esercizi 1753 erschien, erhielt ihre populäre Bezeichnung "Katzenfuge" durch eine Äußerung Muzio Clementis. Die Bearbeitung für vier Blockflöten wird durch die vierstimmige Anlage des Stückes unterstützt, verlangt aber gleichzeitig ein gewisses technisches Niveau der Spieler.

Die vorliegende Auswahl von 7 Inventionen in der Bearbeitung für zwei Blockflöten bietet den Spielern technisch und musikalisch anspruchvollen Übungsstoff und konfrontiert sie gleichzeitig mit musikgeschichtlich relevanten Kompositionen.
