Who among us doesn’t enjoy singing whilst hiking, during a break, around a campfire or at a social gathering? These songs are great fun: they lift the spirits, their rhythm gets into your blood – because doing things together is twice as enjoyable. The most beautiful and well-known songs from the rich treasure trove of German-language hiking songs are collected here, illustrated and accompanied by sheet music. They can be sung or played on the recorder or guitar. A generous and clear layout of the sheet music makes it easy to read the melodies. The chosen, easy-to-play keys allow even the less experienced recorder player to join in. The classic instrument for the hiking song, the guitar, has not been forgotten either. The ‘ Little Marian Mass ’ Op. 59 for two soprano voices and organ was written in 1958 for the pupils of St. Ursula's Grammar School in Duderstadt. This was reported to the Max Baumann Society on 3 March 2009 by Ms Helene Dießner, a former music teacher at the school who still lives in Duderstadt. She had asked Max Baumann for a ‘practical work for equal voices’, ‘because simple masses were rare at that time’. Ms Dießner rehearsed the work for the festive service on the occasion of the golden jubilee (1961) of the Venerable Mother Augustina. Since then, boys' and women's choirs have also sung this mass often and with pleasure in church services, certainly also because of its interesting rhythms and appealing, novel harmonies.
