Twenty well-known songs for the Christmas season are published here under the title ‘ Weihnachtsweisen ’ ( Christmas Melodies ) in quartet and piano arrangements. They are primarily intended for string instruments, either in simple or choral settings. However, woodwind instruments such as the flute, oboe and clarinet can also be included by octaving the first and second violins. The optional piano part in the score makes it possible to perform the songs in smaller ensembles with 1 to 3 violins and cello, or for piano alone. The viola part can also be played by violins (third violin). With the addition of a further cello part, the ensemble can be expanded to include double bass or bassoon. The keys of the songs were chosen with a view to ensuring a good singing range. It was not necessary to print the lyrics, as these songs can be found in all songbooks and hymnals and are generally well known.
